Best Practices: Pain Management & Opioid Prescribing

This education meets the Wisconsin Medical Examining Board's emergency rule relating to continuing medical education on its opioid prescribing guideline. This CE activity meets the SAMHSA/DEA expectations and can be used to fulfill the MATE Act requirement for prescribers.

Objectives

This education is meant to help providers make informed decisions about prescribing opioids for acute, subacute, and chronic pain while encouraging the implementation of best practices for responsible opioid prescribing.  At completion of this education, learners will be able to:

  •  Apply best practices in pain management for acute, subacute, chronic, and post-operative pain
  • Describe assessment of pain
  • Develop a safe and effective pain treatment plan including the focus on function and non-pharmacologic interventions
  • Identify risks and benefits of opioid therapy
  • Manage opioid therapy using evidence-based methods
  • Identify, treat, and/or refer for management of addiction and opioid use disorder
  • Develop an individualized tapering plan for those on chronic opioids
