Objectives

Deaths from drug overdoses have increased in the nation driven in part by addiction to prescription painkillers and heroin. This education is meant to help providers make informed decisions about prescribing opioids for acute and chronic pain while encouraging the implementation of best practices for responsible opioid prescribing.  At completion of this education, learners will be able to:

  • Apply best practices in pain management in acute, chronic, and post-operative pain including the focus on function and on non-pharmacologic interventions for pain
  • Discuss implantable device alternatives for treatment of ongoing pain
  • Adopt and utilize best practices in opioid prescribing
  • Identify factors that increase and decrease mortality in patients being prescribed opioids and prescribe naloxone for at risk patients
  • Identify, treat, and/or refer for management of addiction and opioid use disorder
  • Develop an individualized tapering plan for those on chronic opioids
